During our first trimester of fourth grade we will be devoting most of our reading and writing time to narrative pieces. We do this through developing our skills as a reader and noticing the different ways writers grab our attention and keep it. This can be accomplished by using mentor texts which are not just limited to published authors but also our friends, family and teachers.
In our second trimester in fourth grade we will be focusing on reading and writing informational text across content areas such as social studies and science.
Some of the questions we will be answering in reading:
What are the differences between fiction and non-fiction texts?
How can I use non-fiction text features to activate my background knowledge?
What strategies do good readers use when reading fiction and non-fiction texts?
And much more....
Some of the writing questions to be answered:
How can 2 column notes help me paraphrase and synthesize facts into sentences?
What type of information do I include in an introductory and concluding paragraph?
How do I write an objective and thorough summary?
During our last trimester of fourth grade our writing focus is persuasive writing which includes five paragraphs.
1. Introduction: state you opinion or what point you are trying to persuade the reader into believing
2. Body paragraph 1: first and strongest reason for your opinion/argument. Provide many examples to support your reason.
3. Body paragraph 2: next strong reason for your reader to be persuaded. Provide examples to support the second reason.
3. Body paragraph 3: final strong reason for your opinion/argument. Provide examples to support your final reason.
5. Conclusion: Sum up your opinion and reasons for supporting it.
